How much of a phone can be recycled?
Did you know that 80% of a mobile phone is recyclable, so don’t send it to landfill or leave it in the drawer, recycle it and even earn some cash! Phones are manufactured using a range of different materials; materials like the metals and plastics can be extracted from a device and recycled. As well as the materials, a majority of the components in a device can be reused.
For every 1 million mobile phones that are recycled, 35,274 lbs of copper, 772 lbs of silver, 75 lbs of gold, and 33 lbs of palladium can be recovered. However, 151 million mobile phones are trashed every year, ending up in landfills.
Why should we recycle phones?
We all know the positive impact recycling has on the environment, however recycling our mobile phones and electronics is avoiding future greenhouse gasses, saving energy, protecting the environment and conserving natural recourses. Only 12% of users recycle their phones after using it for an average of 15 months, however the mobile device and components have a usable lifespan of up to 7 years.
